How to Coordinate Your Own Costume Swap

By Faith Mellinger, Publisher & Family Fun Finder for NELA Macaroni Kid October 3, 2019

Every year my kids change their minds on their Halloween costume choices at least three times. One year they all ended up pulling something out of our dress-up box on Halloween day and wearing that instead of their previously chosen outfits. My rule is they get one new Halloween costume and they are welcome to change it, but it has to be created with stuff we already have. My favorite way to change up the costume box - is with a costume swap!

A costume swap is recycling at its most fun. Kids get new-to-them costumes, and parents get to save money and the planet. So gather up your friends, we're gonna share the details on how to get your own costume swap happening before this Halloween.

First: Choose a date and time. (NO date will work for everyone, just choose one and stick with it)

Second: Choose a location (some ideas include your house, a park, a community center, a local play place you frequent often)

Third: Set the rules. Here are our suggested ones:

Suggested Rules for Costume Swap
1. Costumes must be washed and in good wearable condition
2. Limit to 3 Costumes Per Kid (items are traded in 1-for-1 swap, you take as many as you bring)
3. Costumes MUST arrive by event start time to participate (people like to see all choices before they decide)
4. Costume trade happens in first-come basis (first to arrive gets first choice, you can also do a draw of numbers but definitely outline who chooses first)
5. Costumes must be child sizes (or whatever sizes you decide, just define it)

Hint: Give out a coupon or ticket for each item someone brings then they trade those in for their choices to keep track of the swaps!

Now it's time to invite your friends and get swapping!
