MAN COVETS BIRD AT 24TH STREET THEATRE

An Unexpected Childrenโ€™s Theatre Experience

By Jennifer Hierons October 1, 2015
We were invited to attend the U.S. premiere of Man Covets Bird by Finegan Kruckenmeyer at 24th Street Theatre. I was unsure about bringing a 6-year-old to a two-man show. It is suggested for kids 7 and up. I honestly doubted he'd get through it. It didn't look or sound like children's theatre. We sat by the aisle just in case we had to make an early exit.

How we underestimate our children. He was enchanted from the moment the lights went down. Man Covets Bird is a magical, sweet and sometimes heartbreaking story. I was unexpectedly moved and found myself wiping away streaming tears. "Birdsong when you least expect it," thrills the man (played by Andrew Huber). I saw a range of emotions from my son. He didn't understand everything, but I think it is more about what he took away. Last night, I heard him singing softly to himself about birds. Man Covets Bird made us think. It made us feel. It dug in deep and stayed with us. I can't say that about most children's theatre.

This was our first time at 24th Street Theatre, the company that produced Walking the Tightrope (Los Angeles Times "Critic's Choice") to universal acclaim on its stage. 24th Street Theatre's vision is to create challenging, poignant, sophisticated theatre for young audiences. Their belief is that if something bores adults, it's not good enough for kids either. We can't wait to go back for more.

Man Covets Bird is the story of a man who befriends a fallen bird; together, they set out on life's journey. This story about love is told by two talented actors/musicians, Andrew Huber and Leeav Sofer. The story comes to life in a tapestry of storytelling, live music and video projections. It is performed without intermission and runs a little over an hour.

Man Covets Bird plays through November 22 on Saturdays at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and on Sundays at 3 p.m. (dark October 24 through November 1). Tickets are $24 for adults, $10 for kids under 16. 24th Street Theatre is located at 1117 West 24th St., Los Angeles, CA 90007. Gated parking is available across the street for $5; arrive early to get a spot in the lot. For reservations and information, call 213-745-6515 or go to www.24thstreet.org. Man Covets Bird is best enjoyed by adults and kids 7 and up.
